قام بإنشاء برنامج إنكسكيب بعض المبرمجين الذين كانوا يطورون برنامجاً
مشابهاً هو سوديبودي، وقد قام هؤلاء المبرمجين بالاعتماد على سوديبودي
لإنشاء إنكسيكب وأجروا الكثير من التغييرات في الواجهة وقدموا دعماً أفضل
لتقنية أس في جي وXML وCSS.
البرنامج يعمل على أنظمة ويندوز وجنو/لينكس وماك وأي نظام يتوافق مع
يونكس، وهو متخصص في إنشاء رسومات Vector،
لكن يمكن أن أقول بأن هذه الرسومات ليس لديها دقة محددة، بمعنى آخر يمكن
تكبيرها وتصغيرها ولن تتأثر دقتها وستبقى واضحة دقيقة.
البرامج التجارية التي تقوم بنفس عمل برنامج إنكسكيب هي أدوبي إلستراتر
وكورل درو وغيرها.
يقوم هذا البرنامج بتصميم الصور بنسقSVG scalable vector graphics، بالإضافة إلى رسم الخط العربي وتطويع النصوص بأشكال مختلفة حسب ما يريد المستخدم.
كما يحتوى البرنامج على أنساق عديدة مثل كل من EPS، Postscript، JPEG، PNG، BMP، TIFF، ويدعم معايير رئيسية مثل لغة XML .
كما انه لا يحتاج لكي تستخدمه اي مواصفات خاصة ... كمساحة كبيرة او رامات عالية اوكارت شاشة ..الخ
